Sounds of Nature Gallery

Throughout my life, my senses, and more specifically my eyes, have always been attuned to the natural world around me. Whether I’m out on a hike or taking a photo walk, little escapes my purview. And while some of those experiences are captured with my camera, most are just memories to be savored in my mind’s eye.

It was the day after Thanksgiving 2019 when another of my senses became heightened while out on a photo walk. It was a cold morning with drizzle in the atmosphere. My brother and I had been shooting around some of the small lakes and woodlands in my home area. As we were walking toward one of the small lakes I heard a sound that broke the silence of the day. On a rain slicked, two lane road just a few hundred yards away a car lost control, crossed the center line and hit another vehicle. In the blink of an eye two souls perished and stepped into eternity. It’s a sound I’ll never forget. Although we couldn’t see the accident (or want to) through the woods, the ensuing sounds of sirens from first responders seemed incongruent to what we were seeing in the natural world around us. The air was still. The mist was falling. The photographic conditions were perfect. But… that sound!

It’s amazing what you can see when you listen to the voice of creation. In the days after, I began to reflect on that experience and photograph not only what I saw, but what I heard. And, I recognize the sounds I hear in nature aren’t the act of some random evolutionary process. Each has been carefully and wonderfully designed by our Creator. In Genesis, as God creates everything from nothing, the Word says, “And God saw that it was good.” I believe what he heard was good, too. God is all around us – speaking – are you listening? As you give pause and view each of the images in this ongoing series, my hope is that you, too, will hear the Sounds of Nature and listen to the voice of the Creator.

If you’d like to purchase any of the artwork or host this series in your church or business, you will find details on my Purchase/Contact page.

Have you heard the sound of:
Winds blowing, oceans roaring,
Wings beating, birds singing,
Then you’ve heard the voice of God.
Seeds sowing, flowers growing,
Trees quaking, waves breaking,
Then you’ve heard the voice of God.
Grasses swaying, horses neighing,
Rainbows passing, couples laughing,
Then you’ve heard the voice of God.
Morning greeting, hearts beating,
Raindrops falling, children calling,
Then you’ve heard the voice of God.
Moon glowing, winter snowing,
Colors changing, rearranging,
Then you’ve heard the voice of God.
Skies dancing, angels prancing,
Heaven leaping, harvest reaping,
Then yes, you’ve heard the voice of God.

I'd love to hear from you.

100 Years of Hurricane Data

After the recent devastation caused by hurricane Helene I started looking at some raw data on the NOAA website. I decided to download 100 years of data, put into a spreadsheet, then extrapolate the information. What I found was very interesting so I thought I'd share some of that data with you.

Flawless

A favorite song of mine is Flawless by MercyMe. I'll share the lyrics below. I always enjoy seeing a newly emerged butterfly from its cocoon. In essence they are "flawless." Not a mark on them. Such was the case today as I saw this tiger swallowtail blow through our garden.
