Love this little bird!
If you want to get bird shots like this you’ve gotta get down in the marsh/swamp! Prothonotary warblers live and nest there. So, grab some bug repellant and maybe your wellies and head on out. Note they don’t sit still for a second. They are always on the hunt for bugs – and there are plenty of them in the swamp.
In a marsh area like this you can usually get decent separation between the subject and background which makes for a pleasing composition. This bird got so close to me (3 feet) that my lens couldn’t focus on him. (9′ minimum for my Sigma 600mm)
There was a high, slightly overcast sky this morning and the background foliage appeared very dark. The brilliance of the yellow on the warbler caused me to stop the aperture down more than one f-stop. It appears that any light at all on these birds over-saturates the highlights. Be sure to check your histogram and adjust accordingly.
