It’s a hoot!
It’s a hoot calling in barred owls to our backyard. We’ve had a family of owls living in the woods behind our home for several years. Last year we watch them raise their owlets. We haven’t seen the owlets yet this year, but we’re still hoping. The other day I set my bluetooth speaker near the base of a tree and used the Merlin app on my phone to call them in. Within 1-2 minutes in they came and the action began. In the background I kept hearing a redtail hawk squawking. Sure enough, he came flying in a swooped the owls several times. After about 20 minutes the owls flew off and the redtail landed on the ground nearby. If you’re interested in seeing more birds around, be sure to put out the proper food sources, and try calling them in with as app such a s Merlin. Some of the species that have responded to my calls are: cardinals, chickadees, wrens, catbirds, owls, gnatcatchers, brown thrashers, nuthatches, and woodpeckers.
