Woodpecker wars
At first look you may think this pair of male and female downy woodpeckers were all lovey dovey. Think again. Our backyard has erupted into woodpecker wars. I have several perches near our multiple bird feeders in our yard. This give birds a place to land while “waiting their turn” at the feeder. Some birds play nice, while others don’t. This particular male downy (red on back of head) has been dominant while chasing off other birds including his own species. Some species are more territorial than others. And, this male downy is showing how it’s done!
