Make room

It was just a few days ago that I heard the song Make Room for the first time. It left an indelible mark on my soul. (I hope you’ll give it a listen.)

Here is a small portion of the lyrics.

Here is where I lay it down
You are all I’m chasing now
This is my surrender
This is my surrender
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
Do whatever you want to…

A few before that something else left a mark on me. It was a cold, rainy March day and I came upon this old abandoned establishment on the side of the road. I quickly pulled over, grabbed my camera and made a few snaps – on film.

As soon as I made the snap I had the title, Open hearts closed doors.
When I got the film and prints back from the lab, I knew it was a watershed moment for me.
If you look at the image you may notice a few of the same things I did when I captured it. The building is in disrepair, there is an open sign on the wall and a closed sign on the door. The windows are even boarded up.

Ironic, I thought at first. But, it only took a second to realize that we’re that way sometimes – aren’t we? We advertise in bright lights that our “hearts” are open for business, but in reality we’ve posted a closed sign on the door with locks keeping others out.

This incredible song, Make Room, reminds me that I can’t make room for others until I first make room for the One who accepted me just as I am.

Since writing this post a few years ago I began creating mixed media artworks that include my photography. I took this image and created the piece you see below. I also have additional commentary. Included in the mixed media is duct tape, electrical take, scotch tape, a Master lock with key, and chain.

-The duct tape can be used to keep things “in” or “out” or bind things together.

-The electrical tape insulates (and isolates).

-The Scotch tape on the OPEN sign is transparent.

-And I’ll let you make your own inference about the Master lock and key with chain on the door.

Unlike the paradox in this image, His heart is open, His arms wide, and He has made room for you, too. Will you make room for him?

I'd love to hear from you.
