Tools of the trade
My paternal grandfather was a blacksmith until he 85 years old. At 5′ 6″ weighing about a buck thirty-five, he was tougher than a pine knot, as my dad would say. As a boy I got to watch him go about his work – and work he did!
When he quit working after 49 years in the trade my dad asked him, “Papa, why don’t you work one more year and make it an even 50.” “Because I don’t want to,” he said.
I’ve been working for 46 years, but I don’t think I’ll be able to quit at 49 regardless of how bad I’d want to!
