Standing alone
Kathleen and I walk early in the morning. Since school started we’ve been walking past high schoolers waiting for their bus. In one of the small groups standing at a corner we noticed five girls. One standing by herself and a group of the other four. We chatted among ourselves wondering what may be the reason why she was their by herself. (With grandgirls 14 and 11 you ponder these things!) Then the poem below came to mind as I processed the image of this female goldfinch.
Maybe things will be different next time we walk by. I can at least hope!
Standing at the bus stop,
She stood there all alone,
Off to the other side,
Were four girls in their zone.
Then one girl caught her eye,
A smile just for her,
A gesture like a sunrise,
Soft and warm and pure.
The distance started closing,
Two worlds began to blend,
And in that fleeting moment,
She finally found a friend.
