Adversity reveals charachter

I grew up near Ferguson. I have family and friends that still live in or near there, and here’s my take on recent and ongoing events. (No, this just doesn’t pertain to Ferguson, I believe the principle is universal)

ADVERSITY REVEALS CHARACTER

We are seeing the real character of all parties involved through the ongoing events.
Looters were looters before “Ferguson happened.”
Peacemakers were peacemakers before “Ferguson happened.”
Good cops were good cops before “Ferguson happened.”
Bad cops were bad cops before “Ferguson happened.”
Politicians seeking political gain were seeking it before “Ferguson happened.”
Residents working for the betterment of Ferguson were doing so before “Ferguson happened.”
Business owners trying to provide honest goods and services in their neighborhood were doing so before “Ferguson happened.”
People who are oppressing others were doing so before “Ferguson happened.”
People who are helping others were doing so before “Ferguson happened.”
People who are turning the other cheek were doing so before “Ferguson happened.”
Hate was hate before “Ferguson happened.”
Love was love before “Ferguson happened.”
What’s in a man’s or woman’s heart was there long before “Ferguson happened.”

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” MLK

The only way to change culture is to change character. The only way to change character is to change hearts. The only way to change hearts is…

4th Quarter 2024 Birds, Etc.

100 Years of Hurricane Data

After the recent devastation caused by hurricane Helene I started looking at some raw data on the NOAA website. I decided to download 100 years of data, put into a spreadsheet, then extrapolate the information. What I found was very interesting so I thought I'd share some of that data with you.

Standing alone

Kathleen and I walk early in the morning. Since school started we've been walking past high schoolers waiting for their bus. In one of the small groups standing at a corner we noticed five girls. One standing by herself and a group of the other four.

Flawless

A favorite song of mine is Flawless by MercyMe. I'll share the lyrics below. I always enjoy seeing a newly emerged butterfly from its cocoon. In essence they are "flawless." Not a mark on them. Such was the case today as I saw this tiger swallowtail blow through our garden.

Buried Fossils

In between the sporadic bird activity yesterday, I was glancing down at the river rock in our hardscape and noticed a tiny fossil inside a golf ball sized rock that was split in two. I began to ponder for a moment, then came this...
